Tungsten is a refractory metal with high melting point (up to 3400℃), high density (19.32g/cm3), good chemical corrosion resistance and high temperature strength. The tensile strength of sintered tungsten rich alloy can reach up to 1700MPa. The physical and mechanical properties of the refractory metal tungsten are listed in table 1. Due to its excellent mechanical and physical properties, tungsten has become a popular structural material in engineering. For example, it can be used as filament in light bulb and electron tube, anode material in X-ray tube, heat conduction material in high temperature furnace, rocket nozzle and heat insulation material, military balance parts and flywheel making, and tungsten carbide cutting tool material. Tungsten can be made into ingots or sintered. But they are very machinable. Its cutting process has the following features:

When the casting ingot of tungsten is machined, it is easy to produce drop blocks due to the coarse grain.

Tungsten has great chemical activity and strong affinity, and it is easy to produce chip nodules in the process of cutting.

Tungsten is brittle at room temperature, and when it is cut into sintered products, the chips become powdered and very hard, which aggravates tool wear.
